What's under there? Underwear!!

Even before I got married, I dreaded potty training. It's been a fear of mine that's followed me for years. So when we started talking about it and working on it with Jack, I knew I didn't want to force the issue. We got a potty seat last summer that got him excited for a few days. Then bought a little green potty from Ikea to put in the car which excited him for about a week. I also bought an Elmo potty coloring book with stickers and a chart which helped for about two weeks, but none of it ever really took. Jay's mom even tried when she was out here after Claire was born, but he just wasn't that into it. So when we drove home from Utah and Jack used the bathroom every time we stopped and only peed in his diaper when we had no where to stop, I thought maybe he was ready. I waited a week to buy underwear, but he was really excited about picking out his own undies and wearing them.

Risky business!!

The first two days were pretty great. On day two, I was even crazy enough to take him to a kids' club activity at the mall only wearing underwear, and he was awesome. No accidents and he used the little kid bathroom without any issues. But the next few days were not so successful. We had a few accidents, and Jay and I tried very hard to not make a big deal about peeing on the carpet. He also had little messes in his underwear off and on for a week and a half that made me so frustrated. He tried so hard to get to the bathroom in time, but I felt like there was just no way he could do it. I worried about what I was feeding him and thought maybe he wasn't eating enough fruit, veggies, dairy, etc...who knows, but I felt like we needed to revert to pull-ups because I was tried of hand washing underwear. But for the most part he did great. We only had one accident when we were out of the house, and I blame myself. I was taking care of Claire's ridiculous blow-out and hadn't asked him frequently enough if he needed to use the bathroom and he peed his pants. But luckily I've been carrying a change of clothes for both kids, and my friends were there to watch Claire while I took care of Jack, so it wasn't stressful at all. And he even asked me yesterday to tell him the funny story of when he peed his pants, so I'm glad he wasn't embarrassed or upset about it.

Three weeks after buying underwear, we were comfortable enough to award Jack his potty prize. He has been doing great, and I've been trying very hard to give him fruit and veggies multiple times a day, which I feel like has made a huge difference. All messes have been in the toilet and he even pees on his own without help quite often. And he washes his hands all by himself. We are so proud! (and so glad to only have Claire's diapers to change. Hallelujah!)
