Jay had one more day of training on Tuesday, September 13 until he could start work, so we decided to go on a little day trip on Monday. We headed down to the end of the 110 freeway to San Pedro. There is a little aquarium there with beaches, sand, and a park. Of course the aquarium was closed on Monday (as are a lot of other places in LA, which I find very strange), but we knew that before we headed down. We stopped and got lunch at Subway before getting to the Cabrillo State Park by the aquarium and planned on finding a nice rock to picnic on. We did find a rock, but we also found some very hungry seagulls. One sat perched on a rock pretty close to us, staring longingly for us to drop a crumb. At one point, Jack bit off too much and the rest fell to the ground. The bird lunged for the crumb, and the next second we had about 5 more birds hovering above us. Not only were they just hovering above us (it was windy so they were able to stay up without having to work at it), but then they proceeded to start pooping. I told Jay we needed to move. So I grabbed the food and Jay grabbed Jack. The birds knew I had the food, and the next second I was reenacting a terrifying scene from Alfred Hitcock's movie "The Birds". I had ten seagulls pretty much chasing me up the beach, pooping all along the way, getting close to my head every second. I picked up speed, and so did they. Luckily they left Jay and Jack alone, but that meant I had to fend for myself. At one point I'm pretty sure I was running toward the road yelling to Jay "what do I do? How do I get rid of them? Help me!!!" over and over again, fearing for my life. The road seemed liked it was a mile away! I was extremely relieved when I got passed a hill of rocks and the birds all settled onto the sand instead of following me towards the road. I think that was the scariest/amusing moment I've had in my life for a few months. Let's not relive that ever again!
After we ate (without any bird interruptions other than a few longing stares), we walked down the pier to watch the cargo ships come into the port. We went to a little playground and swings to let Jack play, and then hopped in the car to drive over the awesome bridge that takes you way above the port and over to Long Beach. After driving over the bridge, we tried to stop and see the Queen Mary, only to get stuck in the semi-truck line to drop off and pick up cargo containers. We had to embarrassingly inform the man at the entrance that we were lost and he told us how to maneuver around all the semis to get back to the freeway. Yikes, that was scary! Then I drove over the bridge on our way back to San Pedro so Jay could enjoy the view and we headed home with a sleeping Jack and no traffic. Besides being chased by psychotic birds and getting stuck with semis, it was a fun day.
