Diaper rash is ruining my life!!

Seriously, this is getting so old. Jack has had an on-off again rash since the beginning of February. At first it was an infection, and then once that cleared up, it was just red and rashy. We tried taking him off milk, giving him more fiber and fruit, and only giving him first foods that we know he's not allergic to. Nothing has worked, mainly because he keeps having little messes all. day. long. He can never heal since we have to change him at least once an hour. We're now rinsing him off in the bathtub, and he cries every time because he's just so sore and raw. It really breaks our hearts. I want to cry with him. I'm now on a mission to constipate him. Seriously. What else can I do? I would much rather deal with constipation instead of this on-going rash. Any suggestions on things to feed him that will stop all action? I'm pretty much just feeding him bananas and no other fruit. He's eating rice and lots of bread. What else can I give him? Help, please!!!

That is so sad, I hate seeing little kids in pain! Can your doctor give you anything? If I asked Steve he would probably say some kind of thick barrier cream. I hope it clears up soon, poor little guy!

We've been using all kinds of diaper creams and have talked to the doctor's office twice. He has his 15 month checkup tomorrow so we'll ask again, but so far nothing they've suggested has helped.

Bananas, applesauce, and dairy all cause constipation. Sugar is too, but who wants to give their child a lot of sugar! I hope you get it figured out soon. Oh, I just remembered that we gave Emily probiotics to counter her antibiotics because they gave her diarrhea, and they really helped. We would buy them from Costco and they only cost about $4 or $5 dollars for a bottle. We had to get them at the pharmacy counter. I can't believe he is still having problems with that rash, poor thing. I hope you get it figured out soon.

If he is on antibiotics, then I would definitely try probiotics. It could be a yeast infection he's having? I can't remember which one of my kids had one, and my doctor recommended Lotrimin cream (anti-fungal), and it cleared up after a couple of days. Also, I just cleared up my own major skin rash with a lotion from the health food store. It's called Tea Tree Moisturizing lotion by Nature's Gate. I would try that with a layer of vaseline on top. Good luck!

I'm so sorry, Meghan! It sounds so horrible! Poor Jack! Do you have any idea what type of diaper rash it is? Is it yeast/eczema/chaffing? I'd do what you can to try to identify the type, and then maybe you can get a better handle on it. What type of diapers do you use? I always found cheaper diapers are less breathable and often caused diaper rash (stupid, huh?) Also, when cleansing try using a soapless cleanser like Cetaphil or CeraVe. Pat dry and apply some Peri Wash (check the pharmacy counter). Sounds like you've used just about every paste imaginable, but remember - the thicker the better (like vaseline or Aquaphor). Hope your doctor has some answers for you!

When Kari was a baby, her milk allergies caused chronic diarrhea and we were told that meant she wasn't retaining any nutrients from her food.

My daughter had this too, and a cream called Triple Paste was the only thing that helped. The cause was an antibiotic she had been on and the yeast it allowed to grow ...and yogurt at every meal was the treatment that worked for her...just be sure it's a probiotic rich one, with NO corn syrup (which makes runs worse! Limiting sugar and refined flour in general (which feeds the yeast) was also recommended.
