Despite the lack of recent posts, I have not forgotten about my blog. Jay and I were lucky enough to have Jay's two younger brothers, Jess and Jim, come stay with us during their spring break from Utah State University. It was so much fun to have them here, and now as I think about it, we should've taken a picture of our four beds in our studio apartment. It's always amazing to me that even though we aren't in a very big apartment, we can still sleep 4 or 5 people comfortably. Next time I will take some pictures to captivate the joy of having a big sleep over in our one room.
As for Spring Break, I think Jay did a great job of keeping Jess and Jim entertained and hopefully they were able to see some things they wouldn't have otherwise. We took over 400 pictures the 5 days they were here (which my mother-in-law informs me was more than Jess and Jim took on their missions combined), so in an attempt to not overwhelm myself with posting them all at once, I am going to post pictures one day at a time.
Saturday March 8- Since it was Saturday and I didn't have to work, I decided we needed to go to the beach (and since we didn't make it down to Newport Beach to see Shannan and her family the Saturday before). So, we picked the boys up from the airport around 9:30, and I was happy to see they were so excited to not have to wear a coat outside. They couldn't get over how warm it was here when back in Utah is was a brisk 30 degrees. We made a quick trip to our apartment to drop of the luggage and get some food and then headed to Santa Monica. Now, granted, Santa Monica Beach isn't the best, but it's always fun to take a look at the pier and then head down to Venice Beach where
all the really crazy people are. We took a walk along the Third Street Promenade first, which is basically a three block outdoor mall. To my disappointment, none of the boys were really in a shopping mood. Maybe next time.
After quickly perusing some shops on the Promenade, we headed to the Santa Monica Pier which has some shops, games, and little rides. And as would be expected, the people who write your name on a grain of rice for an exorbitant amount of money or draw you as a caricature, etc.
After taking in all the sights from the pier, we decided to rent bikes
because last time we were at the beach we walked down to Venice, and it was probably a good 2 mile jaunt just to get down there. This time we were a little smarter by riding bikes, and it was quite enjoyable even if it was a little crowded.
By the way, Jess is wearing red and Jim is wearing green, for all of you who haven't met Jay's brothers.
There is a little bike path for bikes and roller skates to use which is separate from the sidewalk, so we rode all the way down to Venice, and then walked back on the sidewalk through the huge crowd of people and the 'performers' and 'artists'. It's always interesting to see Venice at least once.
We rented the bikes for only an hour, so after walking through Venice for a while, we realized we only had 20 minutes to get the bikes back on time and we had a 'bike race' to get back to the shop before our hour was up. I came in last, even though Jay's brothers were nice enough to stay behind me so I didn't get left behind.
After the beach, we went to a little ice cream shop up by UCLA called Diddy Riese. You can make your own ice cream sandwich with cookies- they have all varieties of cookies and ice cream- and we even got to see a little crowd for a premiere of "Horton Hears a Who". We didn't see any paparazzi, so I'm pretty sure no one famous was there, but the street was blocked off and orange carpet covered the road, which was fun to see. After the ice cream we headed home to have dinner and relax. Let the sleepover begin!
